Armen Tigranyan was an Armenian composer. He graduated from the Tbilisi Musical College in 1902 as a flutist, studied music theory with Nikolai Klenovsky, and studied composition privately with Makar Yekmalyan.
After graduating, Tigranyan returned to Alexandropol and organized an amateur choir, which he led on tours across Transcaucasia. From 1913, he lived and worked in Tbilisi, where he was an active organizer of Armenian musical life in Georgia.
His best-known works are the operas Anush (1912), based on a poem by Hovhannes Tumanyan, and David Bek (1950), based on the novel of the same name by Raffi. The premiere of David Bek, his final work, took place a few months before his death. His other works include an orchestral Dance Suite (1946), piano and choral pieces, songs to poems by Avetik Isahakyan, and theater music. He also translated several librettos into Armenian, including those for Carmen and Rigoletto.
Tigranyan was named an Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR in 1935 and an Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR in 1936.
