Axel Gade
Axel Wilhelm Gade was a Danish violinist, composer, and music teacher. He was the son of Niels Gade, the grandson of J. P. E. Hartmann, and the uncle of Rued Langgaard.
Gade graduated from the Copenhagen Conservatory in 1881, where he studied violin with Valdemar Tofte. He continued his studies in Berlin with Joseph Joachim and studied counterpoint there with Friedrich Kiel. From 1884 he played violin in the Royal Danish Orchestra, becoming its concertmaster in 1910.
His works include two violin concertos, from 1889 and 1899, and the operas A Venetian Night (1919), based on a work by Holger Drachmann, and Lisette (1921). He also wrote chamber, choral, and vocal music.
From 1885, Gade taught violin at the Copenhagen Conservatory; his students included Henry Holst. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1918.
