Bas Verheijden is a Dutch pianist, born in Zeist on 27 September 1974. He began playing the piano at the age of ten.
He won the Steinway Competition in 1990 and 1992, and received first prize at the Princess Christina Competition in 1991. In 1997, he won the International Scheveningen Piano Competition, where he also received the press prize.
Verheijden completed his studies with Jan Wijn at the Amsterdam Conservatory in 1999, graduating with a distinction grade of 9.5. That year he became the first Dutch musician admitted to the Accademia Pianistica Incontri col Maestro in Imola, Italy, where he studied with Boris Petrushansky for two years. In 2001, he attended a week-long masterclass with Maria João Pires; AVRO made a documentary about this occasion.
In 2000, Verheijden performed Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto on fourteen consecutive evenings in major concert halls across the Netherlands with the Netherlands Student Orchestra, conducted by Roland Kieft. A live recording was made during the tour in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw. In October 2000, he also gave a recital in the Concertgebouw's Young Dutch Musicians series and toured Spain, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Italy, and Norway.
He has appeared with the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra under Lucas Vis, the Royal Netherlands Marine Band under Maurice Hamers, the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra under Anthony Hermus, and the University of Amsterdam J. Pzn Sweelinck Orchestra under Jeppe Moulijn.
Since 1993, Verheijden has maintained a two-piano duo with Niek van Oosterum. They won the Friends' Circle Competition of the Friends of the Concertgebouw Association and the Concertgebouw Prize in 1998, followed by the Netherlands Impresariat chamber music competition in 1999. Later that year, they made their duo debut in the Concertgebouw's Main Hall.
Verheijden has also formed duos with cellist Maarten Jansen and violinist Liza Ferschtman. With Ferschtman, he recorded a double album in 2004 containing works by Franck, Poulenc, Debussy, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky; it received a rating of 10 from Luister in February 2005 and reached number two in Radio 4's Classical Top 50. He is a member of the Bartók Trio with clarinetist Nancy Braithwaite and violinist Marta Abraham, and of the Atlantic Trio with violinist Janneke van Prooijen and cellist Ansfried Plat.
