Claudio Arrau León (6 February 1903 – 9 June 1991) was a Chilean pianist. He was born in Chillán and died in Mürzzuschlag.
Arrau received an important part of his education in Germany, studying at the Berlin University of the Arts and Stern Conservatory. A classical pianist, he performed with the Berlin Academy of Arts and recorded for Philips Records.
He was known for intense interpretations across an exceptionally broad repertoire, from Baroque music to twentieth-century modern works. His recordings of Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Schumann are particularly highly regarded.
Arrau's interpretations were marked by slow tempi and often very dark undertones, giving them a serious, weighty and inward-looking character. He is regarded as one of the most versatile and influential piano soloists of the twentieth century.
