Désiré Heynberg

1831 (Liège) — 1898 (Liège)

Désiré Heynberg was a Belgian violinist and music teacher. He was born in Liège on 27 August 1831 and died there on 25 March 1898.

He was the son of Jacques Heynberg, who directed a wind band in Aarschot. Désiré graduated from the Liège Conservatory in 1848, where he studied with François Prume. He later taught at the conservatory, serving as professor of violin from 1861 to 1882 and professor of viola from 1882 to 1897.

Known chiefly for his teaching, Heynberg taught violinists Martin Marsick, Ovide Musin, Armand Parent, and Guillaume Rémy. Eugène Ysaÿe began studying with him at the age of seven, but Heynberg eventually dismissed him from his class because of his restless temperament.

Heynberg wrote four violin concertos and several fantasies for the instrument, which were successful in the 1870s and 1880s. His son Émile and grandson Georges were violin makers.
