Dmitry Paperno

Dmitry Paperno was a Soviet and American pianist and music teacher. He was born in Kyiv on February 18, 1929. His grandfather and grandmother were killed at Babi Yar.

He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1951. He studied under the noted music teacher Alexander Goldenweiser and also worked privately for a long time with Maria Grinberg.

Paperno won 6th place at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1955 and was also a prize-winner at the first Enescu International Competition in Bucharest in 1958. He performed widely in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and also appeared in Cuba, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

His concert performances were recorded by the Melodiya record label, and he became the first performer recorded on Cedille Records. From 1967 he taught at the Gnessin Institute.

In 1976 he moved to the United States and worked at DePaul University as a professor from 1977. His students included Inna Faliks and Sean Bennett, among others. He also gave master classes at the Moscow Conservatory and in Belgium, Finland, Portugal, and the United States, including teaching sessions in Oberlin and at the Manhattan School of Music.

Paperno was the author of the book Notes of a Moscow Pianist. He died on October 12, 2020, in Northbrook, Cook County, Illinois, United States.
