Eduard Lazarev
Eduard Lazarev (19 December 1935 – 10 January 2008) was a Moldovan Soviet and Russian composer. He was born in Sverdlovsk and died in Moscow.
He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1959, where he studied composition with Semyon Bogatyrev. From 1970 to 1972, he served on the repertoire and editorial board of the Ministry of Culture of the Moldavian SSR, and from 1973 to 1975 on the script and editorial board of the State Committee for Cinematography under the Council of Ministers of the Moldavian SSR.
Lazarev co-wrote the music for the revised 1980 version of the anthem of the Moldavian SSR. His stage works included the ballets The Cliff (1959), The Broken Sword (1960), Antony and Cleopatra (1965), and the eight-act ballet The Master and Margarita, based on Mikhail Bulgakov's work and composed between 1974 and 1983. His operas included The Bedbug (1960) and The Dragon, based on Yevgeny Schwartz's play and staged in Chișinău in 1976.
He also wrote film music for Moldova-Film, including Reserve Officer and Eagle Island, and for the Odesa Film Studio, including Odesa Holidays (1965), directed by Yury Petrov, and Dubravka (1967), directed by Radomir Vasilevsky.
Lazarev received the Medal “For Labour Valour” in 1960. He was named an Honoured Art Worker of the Moldavian SSR in 1964, received the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR in 1966, and won a prize for best music for the film The Last Month of Autumn at the Second All-Union Film Festival in Kyiv that year. In 1978, he was named People's Artist of the Moldavian SSR.
