Edward Steuermann

Edward Steuermann was an Austro-American pianist and music educator. Born in Sambor on June 18, 1892, he studied in Lviv with Vilém Kurz and later in Berlin with Ferruccio Busoni. He also studied composition with Arnold Schoenberg.

Steuermann gave the first performance of Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto and played the piano part in the vocal-instrumental cycle Pierrot Lunaire. He arranged Schoenberg’s string sextet Verklärte Nacht for piano trio.

He taught in Vienna and Darmstadt. His piano students included Theodor Adorno in Vienna and Erika Haase in Darmstadt. In 1938 he emigrated to the United States, where he became known chiefly for performing Beethoven and for teaching at the Juilliard School of Music.

Steuermann also wrote works, mainly for piano, as well as songs set to texts by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Bertolt Brecht. He died in New York on November 11, 1964.
