Evgeny Mikeladze
Evgeny Semyonovich Mikeladze was a Soviet conductor, born in Baku on June 27, 1903; some sources give July 27. His family moved to Tbilisi when he was a child. He studied with N. A. Malko and A. V. Gauk.
From 1930, Mikeladze worked as a conductor at the Georgian Opera and Ballet Theater, becoming its chief conductor in 1933. Beginning in 1931, he also led the student orchestra at the Tbilisi Conservatory. His students included Shalva Azmaiparashvili.
Dmitri Shostakovich described Mikeladze as an outstanding Soviet conductor and praised his talent, musical and general culture, and contribution to Georgian musical culture. Mikeladze received the title Honored Art Worker of the Georgian SSR in 1936 and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1937.
Mikeladze died in Tbilisi in 1937. The Central Music School in Tbilisi and the National Symphony Orchestra of Georgia bear his name.
