Felix Galimir
Felix Galimir was an American violinist and music teacher of Austrian origin. He was born in Vienna into a Sephardic family; his parents were Mosco Galimir and Elsa Russo.
Galimir graduated from the Vienna Conservatory in 1928 and subsequently studied in Berlin with Carl Flesch.
In 1929, he founded the Galimir Quartet with his sisters. The ensemble specialized in performing new music, particularly works by Arnold Schoenberg and his circle. Galimir moved to the United States in 1938 and became an American citizen in 1944. He performed in ensembles and served as one of the concertmasters of the NBC Symphony Orchestra from 1939 to 1954.
From 1954, Galimir taught each summer at the Marlboro Music School. He later taught at major American conservatories: the Juilliard School from 1962, the Curtis Institute from 1972, and Mannes College from 1977. His later students included Jennifer Koh and Chi-Young.
