Friedrich Meyer

Friedrich Meyer was a German conductor, born on March 2, 1818, in Altenburg. He died in Munich on May 30, 1893.

In 1845–1846, Meyer conducted the Euterpe musical society’s symphony concerts in Leipzig. He later worked in Freiburg, joined Berlin’s Royal City Theater in 1848, and conducted in Trier and Szczecin. From 1854, he worked at the Munich Court Opera, initially as second conductor under General Music Director Franz Lachner. His duties included conducting French and Italian works and subordinate German repertoire. He became royal music director in 1869 and retired in 1882.

Meyer was a professor at the Munich Conservatory. From 1875 to 1880, Richard Strauss studied music theory, harmony, and counterpoint with him; Strauss later dedicated several works to Meyer. Another of Meyer’s students was Hugo Reichenberger.
