Galina Tyumeneva
Galina Tyumeneva (full name Galina Alexandrovna Tyumeneva; 7 January 1903 – 9 September 1999) was a Ukrainian Soviet musicologist, teacher, and music critic. She held the degree of Candidate of Arts Studies from 1945 and was a professor.
Born in Poltava, she studied piano at the Poltava Music School. In 1935 she graduated from the Kharkiv Music and Drama Institute, where she studied music theory and composition with Semion Bohatyrev; she also studied piano with Petro Lutsenko.
Tyumeneva joined the Union of Soviet Composers in 1936. In 1945 she defended her Candidate of Arts Studies dissertation at the Moscow Conservatory, entitled “Tchaikovsky and the Mighty Handful.”
She taught at the Kharkiv Music School during the 1930s and 1940s. From 1943 to 1949, she was artistic director of the Kharkiv Philharmonic. She taught at the Kharkiv Conservatory, later the Institute of Arts, from 1936 to 1989; she became an associate professor in 1947 and chaired its Department of Music History from 1947 to 1979.
Her students in music history and folklore studies included Taras Kravtsov, Halyna Bortnovska, Borys Yarovynsky, Maryna Cherkashyna, Tetiana Krasnopolska, Halyna Kuleshova, Nina Tyshko, Serhii Tyshko, Yurii Shcherbynin, Nina Ocheretovska, Liudmyla Shubina, Hryhorii Hanzburg, and Oleksandr Shchetynsky.
Tyumeneva wrote studies including Music in Repin’s Life (1948), Tchaikovsky and Ukraine (1955), and Gogol and Music (1966), and contributed articles to the Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia. She co-compiled Semion Bohatyrev: Studies, Articles, Memoirs (1972), prepared Mykola Koliada’s musical works for publication, and readied Ivan Miklashevsky’s book on the musical history of Kharkiv for print. Her book Mykola Koliada: Life and Work was published in 2002.
She received the Medal “For Labour Valour” on 24 November 1960. She was married to the composer Valentin Borisov, rector of the Kharkiv Conservatory.
