Harold Bauer
Harold Bauer was an Anglo-American pianist, violinist, and music teacher. He was born on April 28, 1873, in New Malden, Surrey, the son of a German violinist who lived in England.
He studied violin with his father and then with Adolf Pollitzer. Bauer made his debut as a violinist in 1883 and toured Britain during his adolescence and early adulthood. In 1892, he went to Paris and studied with Ignacy Jan Paderewski for a year. After completing his studies, he toured Russia as a pianist, then performed in France, Germany, and Spain.
In 1908, Bauer gave the world premiere of Claude Debussy’s suite Children’s Corner. He also performed chamber music in a trio with Jacques Thibaud and Pablo Casals. In 1912, he received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Gold Medal.
Bauer settled in the United States and became an American citizen in 1917. He taught at the Manhattan School of Music and became a prominent music teacher. He died in Miami on March 12, 1951.
