Hugo Steurer was a German pianist and music educator, born in Munich on November 13, 1914. He made his concert debut in 1934 and quickly gained a reputation as a notable interpreter of Ludwig van Beethoven.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Steurer made numerous recordings, mainly of classical repertoire, including Beethoven’s and Mozart’s sonatas and concertos, as well as piano pieces and songs by Franz Schubert. In 1967, he toured Latin America with Georg Schmid. H. H. Stuckenschmidt praised their duo as “technically and artistically flawless.”
Steurer taught at the Leipzig Academy of Music from 1953 to 1958, then at the Munich Academy of Music until 1981. His best-known student was Gerhard Oppitz. He also edited several editions of piano works by Beethoven and Johann Sebastian Bach.
