Igor Weiss

1906 (Moscow) — 1941 (Vyazma)

Igor Weiss was a Russian organist, born in Moscow in 1906. He was the son of music teacher Dmitry Weiss.

In 1926, Weiss entered the Moscow Conservatory to study piano. He completed his studies in 1936 in Alexander Goedicke’s organ class. His training was interrupted in the early 1930s when he was arrested and sent to a labor camp, where he worked on the White Sea–Baltic Canal. At the camp, he organized musical activities and wrote and staged the opera Dam No. 6, performed by prisoners.

After his release, Weiss worked at the Moscow Conservatory from 1937 to 1941 as an organ technician and assistant in Goedicke’s class. He began writing a book titled History of the Organ. His skill as an organist was highly regarded by specialists and music enthusiasts.

Weiss died near Vyazma in October 1941.
