Ilya Grubert

Ilya Khaimovich Grubert is a Latvian-Dutch violinist, born on May 13, 1954, in Riga. He is the brother of the pianist Naum Grubert.

He studied at the Emils Darzins Music School in Riga, then at the Central Music School with Yuri Yankelevich and Zinaida Gilels, and finally at the Moscow State Conservatory with Leonid Kogan, graduating in 1978.

In 1975 he won second prize at the Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki, and in 1977 he took first place at the All-Union Competition of Performing Musicians in Lviv. These successes were followed by first prizes at the Paganini International Competition in Genoa in 1977 and at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1978.

In the 1980s Grubert emigrated from the Soviet Union. He later settled in the Netherlands, where he has taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

Grubert has made recordings for Western labels, while working with Russian orchestras on violin concertos by Paganini, Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Myaskovsky, Weinberg, and Arutyunian. His recordings also include chamber works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Kara Karayev, and others.
