Isidor Seiss was a German pianist and music educator, born in Dresden on December 23, 1840. He studied with Friedrich Wieck and, from 1858 to 1860, with Moritz Hauptmann at the Leipzig Conservatory.
From 1871, Seiss was a professor at the Cologne Conservatory. His students included Willem Mengelberg, Ellie Ney, Frederick Corder, and Hugo Grüters.
Seiss wrote chamber pieces for piano and made transcriptions, including Beethoven’s contredanses for piano four hands and an arrangement of Carl Maria von Weber’s Second Piano Concerto. Edward Grieg dedicated the third book of his Lyric Pieces, Op. 43 (1886), to him. Seiss died in Cologne on September 25, 1905.
