Johann Goltermann

1825 (Hamburg) — 1876 (Stuttgart)

Johann August Julius Goltermann was a German cellist and music teacher, born in Hamburg on July 25, 1825. He studied with Bernhard Romberg as a child and later studied cello in Dresden with Friedrich August Kummer.

Goltermann served for a time as principal cellist of the Hamburg Opera. From 1850 to 1862, he lived and worked in Prague, where he taught at the Prague Conservatory. As a chamber musician, he took part in the premiere of Bedřich Smetana’s Piano Trio, Op. 15, on December 3, 1855, with violinist Anton Bennewitz and Smetana at the piano. His students included Alois Neruda, Ludwig Ebert, and David Popper, who later dedicated his first cello concerto, Op. 8, to Goltermann.

From 1862 to 1870, Goltermann was principal cellist of the Stuttgart Court Orchestra. He retired in 1870 and died in Stuttgart on April 4, 1876. Cello pieces sometimes attributed to him were in fact written by his namesake Georg Goltermann.
