Johannes Paulsen
Johannes Carl Paulsen (Estonian: Johannes Carl Paulsen; 13 February 1879, Kremenchug — 17 November 1945, Lübeck) was an Estonian violinist and conductor. From the age of six he lived in Reval (Tallinn), where he completed gymnasium.
He then graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied violin with Ivan Grzhimali, and also studied with Sergei Taneyev. In 1905–1914 he toured in various countries as a soloist and as a member of a quartet. In 1912–1914 he also studied conducting in Vienna.
In 1914 Paulsen returned to Reval. Until 1936 he led the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, becoming an important figure in the city’s musical life. From the founding of the Tallinn Conservatory in 1919 he taught there, and from 1925 he held the title of professor.
Among his students were Roman Matsov and Vladimir Alumäe, among others. In 1939 Paulsen emigrated with his family to Germany as part of repatriation. He was awarded the Order of the White Star, 3rd Class, in 1939.
