Jorge Prats

b. 1956 (Camagüey)

Jorge Luis Prats is a Cuban pianist, born in Camagüey on July 3, 1956. He graduated from Cuba’s Higher Institute of Arts in 1976, where his mentors included César Pérez Sentenat and Margot Rojas Mendoza. He later studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Rudolf Kerer, the Paris Conservatory with Magda Tagliaferro, and the Vienna Academy of Music with Paul Badura-Skoda.

In 1977, Prats won first prize at the Marguerite Long–Jacques Thibaud International Competition in Paris. He also received special prizes for performances of works by Maurice Ravel and André Jolivet. His Cuban honors include the Cuban State Prize, awarded in 2004.

Prats has made numerous recordings, including a recording of Alexander Scriabin’s études. He has taught in Havana, Bogotá, Mexico City, Córdoba, and Toronto. He lives in Hialeah, Florida.
