Joseph Giehrl

Joseph Giehrl was a German pianist, composer, and music teacher. He was born in Munich on September 18, 1857, and died there on April 24, 1893.

He graduated from the Munich Conservatory, where he studied with Joseph Rheinberger. He also studied with Franz Liszt in Weimar and Rome in 1879–1880. Giehrl later taught in Munich; his students included Richard Strauss, who dedicated his Piano Sonata, Op. 5 (1882), to him.

As an accompanist, Giehrl took part in the first performance of Johannes Brahms’s song “The Sea,” Op. 20, No. 3, in 1889, with singers Mathilde von Schellhorn and Maria Schmidtlein. He also accompanied other singers, including Eugen Gura. His works included piano and vocal compositions.
