Jovdat Hajiyev was an Azerbaijani and Soviet composer. He was born on June 18, 1917, in Nukha, now Sheki.
He graduated from the Azerbaijan State Conservatory in 1938, where he studied with L. M. Rudolf, and from the Moscow Conservatory in 1947, where he studied composition with Dmitri Shostakovich. He then began teaching at the Baku Conservatory and served as its rector from 1957 to 1969.
Hajiyev co-wrote the opera Vatan (Homeland) with Kara Karayev. His other works include eight symphonies, the symphonic poem For Peace! (1951), an Azerbaijani Suite, a sinfonietta, and music for string quartet, piano, and choir.
He was named People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1960 and Honored Art Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1958. Hajiyev died in Baku on January 18, 2002, and was buried there in the Alley of Honor.
