Leo Korkhin
Leo Korkhin was a Soviet and Russian conductor, born in Kyiv on March 18, 1929. He studied at a music school in Kyiv, graduating in 1946, and then attended the Kyiv Conservatory, which he completed in 1951.
From 1944, Korkhin worked as a violinist with the State Symphony Orchestra of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv for seven years. In 1951 he moved to Donetsk, where he worked with the local orchestra for three years. He moved to Leningrad in 1954 and conducted the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied with Nikolai Semyonovich Rabinovich.
Korkhin recorded music for numerous films, including White Sun of the Desert and Zhenya, Zhenechka and Katyusha, as well as for radio and television productions. From 1967 he was music director of the Leningrad Ballet on Ice, described in the article as the only ice ballet with a classical repertoire. From 1997 he taught at the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture as an associate professor in its Department of Musical Variety Art. He was named Honored Artist of the Russian Federation in 1998.
Korkhin died in St. Petersburg on August 11, 2018, and was buried at the Preobrazhenskoe Jewish Cemetery there.
