Lyudmila Veniaminovna Vaverko was a Moldavian music educator. She was born on December 2, 1927 in Odessa, into a Jewish family, and died on April 18, 2020 in Chisinau. She was awarded the title Master of Arts of Moldova in 1995 and was a recipient of the Order of Labour Glory.
From 1933 to 1941 she studied at the music school of Pyotr Stolyarsky, where her teacher was Berta Reingbald. Before the occupation of Odessa, she was evacuated with her parents to Ufa. During the journey, in a bombing attack in July 1941, Vaverko was wounded in the head and in the left hand.
In 1950 she graduated from the Odessa Conservatory as a piano student. She then taught at the Voroshilovgrad Music College and worked as a concertmaster at the Odessa Conservatory.
In 1955, together with her husband, the well-known Moldavian musicologist Zinovy Stolyar, she settled in Chisinau. There she worked first as a concertmaster, then as a teacher and professor, and from 1993 to 2002 she served as head of the special piano department at the Chisinau Institute of Arts.
Vaverko was also the editor and compiler of collections of piano miniatures by Moldavian composers. Her students included, among others, Oleg Maisenberg. She prepared teaching materials and publications devoted to selected piano works by Moldavian composers, piano pieces, the study of musical works, the teaching of polyphonic works in children's music school piano classes, and questions of interpretation, including a study of the dramatic role of performance means in interpreting Viktor Zagorsky's piano work "Novella."
Her legacy was later reflected in publications devoted to her life and teaching, including Lyudmila Vaverko and Her Students: Articles, Documents, Memoirs, edited by Victoria Melnik, and S. Pozhar's To the Mysteries of Pianism: Lessons of the Life and Work of Lyudmila Vaverko. An interview with her was also published under the title "The Stolyarsky School Determined My Life."
