Marguerite Long

1874 (Nîmes) — 1966 (Paris)

Marguerite Long, born Marie-Charlotte Long, was a French pianist and teacher. She was born in Nîmes on November 13, 1874, and died in Paris on February 13, 1966.

Long studied with Antoine François Marmontel and, at the Paris Conservatory, Henri Fissot. She taught at the conservatory from 1906 to 1940 and also taught at a Paris music school from 1921. Her students included Philippe Entremont, Ingrid Haebler, Jacques Février, and Samson François. In 1942, she and Jacques Thibaud opened a music school in Paris; the following year, they established the Long-Thibaud International Competition for pianists and violinists.

Long gave concerts around the world for more than half a century. In April 1955, she toured the Soviet Union and performed Maurice Ravel’s piano concerto with an orchestra conducted by K. P. Kondrashin. Ravel dedicated the concerto to her, and she had given its first performance in 1932. Long was also close to Ravel, Claude Debussy, and Gabriel Fauré.

Her published works include The Piano (1959), At the Piano with Debussy (1960), The Little Piano Method (1963), At the Piano with Fauré (1963), and At the Piano with Ravel (1971).
