Markus Hinterhäuser is an Austrian pianist and music figure, born on 30 March 1958 in La Spezia, Italy.
He studied at the Vienna University of Music with Elisabeth Leonskaja and at the Mozarteum with Oleg Maisenberg. He performed with the Arditti Quartet and accompanied singer Brigitte Fassbaender.
His repertoire focuses mainly on 20th-century music, from the Second Viennese School to works by Galina Ustvolskaya, Luigi Nono, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Morton Feldman.
From 1993, Hinterhäuser was one of the curators of the Flow of Time program at the Salzburg Festival. In 2006, he became director of the festival’s concert program, and in 2011 he served for one year as its artistic director. Since 2014, he has been artistic director of the Vienna Festival.
