Nukhim Loznik
Nukhim (Naum) Loznik (10 August 1925 – 29 September 1989) was a Moldavian Soviet violinist and an Honored Artist of the Moldavian SSR (1983). He was born in Botoșani, Romania, into the family of theatrical administrator Moisey Loznik, a native of Poland, and Ides Loznik, who came from a pharmacists' family in Bender. His father managed several touring Yiddish theatre companies in Romania and Bessarabia.
Loznik studied violin in Chernivtsi and later with I. L. Dailis, concertmaster of the Bucharest Opera. In 1940 he moved with his parents and their theatre company to Chișinău, where the Chișinău State Jewish Theatre was formed from the troupe. He continued his studies at the ten-year music school under Dailis.
During the war he was evacuated to Uzbekistan, where he worked as a shoemaker and took weekly lessons from D. S. Bertier, who had been evacuated to Tashkent. After returning to Chișinău, Loznik entered the Chișinău Conservatory and graduated in 1952, again studying with his longtime teacher, I. L. Dailis.
While still a student, he performed in the Moldavian State Jazz Orchestra conducted by Shiko Aranov and in the symphony orchestra of the Moldavian Philharmonic. From 1966 he served as inspector of the Moldavian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Between 1966 and 1971, he was a violinist and conductor at the Chișinău Jewish Theatre, organized by director Ruvim Levin. From 1976 until his death, he was concertmaster of the orchestra of the Chișinău Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Loznik died in Chișinău on 29 September 1989. His son, Mark Loznik, was a cellist in the orchestra of the Bucharest Opera Theatre.
