Otmar Suitner

1922 (Innsbruck) — 2010 (Berlin)

Otmar Suitner (16 May 1922 – 8 January 2010) was an Austrian conductor and pianist.

He began studying music in Innsbruck as a pianist with Fritz Weidlich. From 1940 to 1942, he studied at the Mozarteum with Franz Ledwinka for piano and Clemens Krauss for conducting. He gave piano concerts in the 1940s and conducted Rigoletto at the Innsbruck Theatre in 1944. From 1952, he worked almost exclusively as a conductor.

Suitner led the Remscheid City Orchestra from 1952 to 1957 and the Philharmonic State Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate from 1957 to 1960, accompanying performances by Maria Callas. He then headed the Dresden State Orchestra from 1960 to 1964 and the Unter den Linden Opera in Berlin from 1964 to 1971, and again from 1974 to 1991. In 1963, he received the State Prize of the GDR. He conducted an orchestra for the last time in Gothenburg in 1994.

He was regarded as a specialist in the works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. His extensive recordings, made mainly with orchestras in Dresden and Berlin as well as Japanese and American ensembles, also include works by Mozart, Beethoven, Antonín Dvořák—including all of his symphonies—Schubert and Schumann.

In 2006, his son Igor Heitzmann made the feature-length documentary After the Music about his father.
