Rafael Orozco Flores was a Spanish pianist, born in Córdoba on January 24, 1946. He studied at the Madrid Conservatory with José Cubiles and, after completing his studies, continued his training with Alexis Weissenberg and Maria Curcio.
In 1966, Orozco won the Leeds International Piano Competition, launching his international career. He worked with conductors including Herbert von Karajan, Carlo Maria Giulini, and Daniel Barenboim, and toured around the world.
In 1971, he recorded the piano part of the soundtrack for The Music Lovers, a biographical film about Tchaikovsky. Film critics regarded the movie as highly unsuccessful but praised Orozco’s playing. In 1987, Córdoba named him an honorary citizen, awarding him a gold medal. After his death in Rome on April 24, 1996, the city conservatory was named after him.
