Sergei Milstein

Sergei Milstein is a Russian-Swiss pianist and music teacher, born on March 14, 1959. He is the son of Yakov Milstein.

In 1972 he played the role of Hanno in the television production Buddenbrooks, directed by Alexander Orlov. He graduated from the Central Music School in 1977, where he studied with Anaida Sumbatyan. He then continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory under the guidance of his father; after the elder Milstein's death in 1981, he studied with Boris Bekhterev. He completed the course in 1983.

Milstein performed both as a soloist and as an accompanist, working with the violinist Ilya Kaler, the cellist Alexander Knyazev, and the singer Galina Pisarenko. He also took part in the December Evenings festival. In 1988 he received second prize at the international music festival Prague Spring, and in 1991 he won third prize at the Viotti International Competition.

From 1991 he lived in France, giving concerts in various European countries and in the United States. For many years he performed with the Czech violinist Frantisek Novotny and recorded several albums with him, including double concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra.

From 2003 to 2006 he was a professor at Kobe University in Japan. Since 2008 he has been a professor at the Geneva Conservatory. His children are the violinist Maria Milstein and the pianist Nathalia Milstein.
