Theodorus Hendricus Hubertus Verhey (10 June 1848 – 29 January 1929) was a Dutch pianist and composer. He was born and died in Rotterdam.
Verhey was the son of Johannes Verheij, a music teacher, gifted cellist and musician with the German Opera, and Johanna Cornelia Strakke. He remained unmarried. His first music lessons came from his father, after which he studied at the music school in Rotterdam.
From 1865 he attended the Royal Music School in The Hague. His teachers included Willem Nicolaï, for music theory and composition, and Joseph Giese, for cello, while Johan Hendrik Sikemeier continued to teach him piano in Rotterdam. In 1868 he returned to Rotterdam and studied composition with Woldemar Bargiel.
Verhey began to gain attention as a composer from the age of 25. His early output focused on chamber music, including three piano trios, a piano quartet and a quintet, as well as piano pieces and songs. He later wrote an overture, two symphonies, concertos, and choral music, particularly Catholic church music. His concertos include two flute concertos, in D minor, Op. 43, and A minor, Op. 57, and a Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 54.
His three German-language operas drew the greatest attention: Eine Johannisfeier auf Amron, a one-act opera to a libretto by Karl Dibbern, completed in 1880; Imilda, a four-act opera to a libretto by Willem Smalt, from 1885; and König Arpad, a three-act opera to a libretto by Flora delle Neve, from 1888. These works were performed in the Netherlands and abroad. Imilda was the most successful; it gained wide recognition in 1923, when it was staged in Rotterdam for Verhey's 75th birthday with Jacques Urlus as Tazio.
Other works include a Te Deum and a Requiem. Verhey earned his living by teaching piano and theory at the Rotterdam music school. A newspaper report published the day after his death stated that his music had not adapted to newer musical styles and was already falling into obscurity. In the 21st century, recordings of his flute concertos and his Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 20, remained available.
He was buried at the Roman Catholic Crooswijk Cemetery.
