Therese Behr

1876 (Stuttgart) — 1959 (Lugano)

Therese Behr was a German singer and contralto. She was the wife of pianist Arthur Schnabel, whom she married in 1905, and the mother of pianist Karl Ulrich Schnabel and actor Stefan Schnabel.

She studied with Julius Stockhausen in Frankfurt am Main, Franz Wüllner in Cologne, and Etelka Gerster in Berlin. In 1899, she made a successful debut in Berlin, performing chamber vocal repertoire with pianist Alfred Reisenauer.

She later performed in an ensemble with her husband and, later, her son. Before the First World War, she became known for performing German songs ranging from Schubert to Hugo Wolf, as well as compositions by her husband that he wrote specifically for her. In the 1930s, she lived with her husband in England and Italy; from 1939, they lived in the United States.
