Vladimir Femelidi was a Ukrainian composer, born in Odessa in 1905. His father, Alexander Femelidi, was a bibliographer. At his father's insistence, he studied history from 1921 to 1924, then graduated from the Music and Drama Institute in 1928. He studied conducting with Grigory Stolyarov and composition with Porfiry Molchanov and Nikolai Vilinsky.
Femelidi worked as a conductor at the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater. His best-known works include the opera The Break (1929) and the ballet Carmagnole (1930). He also wrote the vocal-symphonic poem By the Seashore (1927), a symphony (1927), violin and piano concertos, and songs to poems by Alexander Pushkin, Konstantin Balmont, and Sergey Gorodetsky.
Femelidi died of pneumonia in Odessa in 1931. At his request, his own funeral march from Carmagnole was performed at his funeral.
