Wibi Soerjadi is a Dutch concert pianist and composer. He was born Wibisono Augustinus Soerjadi on 2 March 1970 in Leiden, the Netherlands. One of five sons of mathematician Raphaël Soerjadi and sociologist Floor Wasirin, he began playing the piano at the age of eleven.
At fifteen, Soerjadi won first prize at the Princess Christina Competition in The Hague. He then studied with Jan Wijn at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, graduating early after three years as a performing musician with the highest possible mark. While still a student, he won third prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition.
In 1992 he performed his own Queen's Day Paraphrase for Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus on Queen's Day. Since 1993, he has given an annual Christmas recital at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, which has been sold out from the beginning. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in New York on 22 November 1996.
In 2002 Soerjadi moved from Twisk to the Wulperhorst estate in Zeist, where he gave concerts in his own venue, usually called the Salon, and founded the Wibi Academy for masterclasses and summer courses. He moved to Villa Peckedam on the Nijenhuis estate in Diepenheim shortly before the Wulperhorst estate was sold in 2019.
For the fiftieth anniversary of Disneyland California in 2005, Soerjadi performed at Disneyland Paris, playing his Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur des thèmes de La Belle et la Bête. He marked his twenty-fifth anniversary in 2006 with a free open-air piano festival in his garden. In 2007 he gave a recital during Queen Beatrix's state visit to Slovakia and led a masterclass for leading students at the conservatory in Košice.
In 2009, damage to his auditory nerve prevented Soerjadi from working for several months. He composed the nine-part love story Amor & Psyche during this period of deafness. He performed the work at his second Carnegie Hall appearance on 27 January 2011, marking thirty years of activity; it was also released as an album. In 2011 he presented the television programme Under Wibi's Wings, and in 2019 he was a jury member on the SBS6 programme Superkids.
His selected compositions include Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur des thèmes de La Belle et la Bête (2005), a paraphrase on The Lion King (2007), The Spirit of Sunrise (2007), Dance of Devotion (2007), Bellezza (2008), For Mama (2008), Amor & Psyche (2010), and Once Upon a Time (2017). His awards include first prizes at the Princess Christina Competition in 1985 and the National Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians in 1988, the Elisabeth Everts Prize in 1990, the Echo Klassik Award in 1998, and the Edison Classical Music Award audience prize in 1999. He was appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2007 and promoted to Officer of the order in 2022.
