Yakov Katsnelson is a Russian pianist and music teacher, born on May 25, 1976 in Moscow.

In 1993 he graduated from the Gnessin Secondary Special Music School, where he studied flute and piano. In 1998 he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in the piano class of Eliso Virsaladze, People's Artist of the USSR, and in 2000 he completed postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory.

Since 1998 Katsnelson has taught accompaniment skills at the Gnessin Moscow Secondary Special Music School, and since 2001 at the Moscow Conservatory, where he later became an associate professor. Alongside his pedagogical work, he has pursued an active concert career.

He has received distinction at several major international competitions: he was a diploma recipient at the 10th International Bach Competition in Leipzig and at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium in 1999, a prize-winner at the International Piano Competition in Tbilisi in 2001, a finalist at the Clara Haskil International Competition in Vevey in 2003, and a prize-winner at the 1st Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition in Moscow in 2005.

In addition to his solo career, Katsnelson has appeared as a chamber musician. From 1996 to 2005 he was a member of the Akadem-Trio together with violinist Irina Petukhova and cellist Boris Lifanovsky. With this ensemble he won first prize and six special prizes at the Taneyev International Chamber Ensemble Competition in Kaluga in 1999, as well as second prize at the 20th International Chamber Ensemble Competition in Trapani in 2000.

His discography includes recordings such as Barber: Sonata, Op. 6 - Grieg: Sonata in A Minor - Martinu: Variations on a Slovakian Theme with cellist Kristina Blaumane (2007), Brahms Viola with Maxim Rysanov and Kristina Blaumane (2008), the solo album Katsnelson Plays Bach (2011), The Leaden Echo with music by Leonid Desyatnikov and a group of performers (2011), Beethoven: Sonatina for Viola and Cello, Duo for Viola and Cello, et al. with Maxim Rysanov and Kristina Blaumane (2012), and Hindemith: Ludus Tonalis (2025).
