Yevgeny Nazaykinsky
Yevgeny Vladimirovich Nazaykinsky was a Soviet and Russian musicologist, Doctor of Art Studies, and professor of the Moscow Conservatory. He was born on August 12, 1926, in Novaya Malykla, Melekessky Uyezd, Ulyanovsk Governorate, USSR, and died on April 3, 2006, in Moscow, Russia.
From 1943 to 1950 he served in the army and was a participant in the Great Patriotic War. In 1955 he graduated from the Gnesin State Musical-Pedagogical Institute. From 1952 to 1962 he worked in the Laboratory of Musical Acoustics.
From 1962 he taught at the Department of Music Theory of the Moscow Conservatory. Between 1974 and 1996 he headed the department, and from 1976 he was a professor there.
In his scholarly work, from 1967 he held the degree of Candidate of Sciences with the dissertation “On Musical Tempo,” supervised by S. S. Skrebkov. From 1973 he was Doctor of Art Studies with the dissertation “On the Psychology of Musical Perception.” He also served as editor and compiler of the collections “Musical Art and Science” (issues 1–3, 1970–1978) and “Orchestra. Instruments. Score” (issues 1–2, 2003–2007).
Nazaykinsky was the author of more than 100 works. His books include “On Musical Tempo” (1965), “On the Psychology of Musical Perception” (1972), “The Logic of Musical Composition” (1982), “The Sound World of Music” (1988), “Style and Genre in Music” (2002), “Sergei Sergeyevich Skrebkov. Musician. Scholar. Teacher. Thinker.” (2005), “My School. The Moscow Conservatory during the Great Patriotic War” (2005), and “History in Music. Selected Studies” (2009). Among his articles were works on the multilayered nature of musical time, combinatorics in the work of Sergei Prokofiev, spatial music, the objecthood of musical thought, and fugue in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and Rachmaninoff’s “Variations on a Theme of Corelli.”
He was buried in Moscow at Troyekurovskoye Cemetery. His son Vladimir, born in 1955, became a mathematician and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
