Yevhen Stankovych is a Soviet and Ukrainian composer and teacher. He was born in 1942 in Svaliava. He studied at the Uzhhorod Music College, the Mykola Lysenko Lviv State Conservatory and the Pyotr Tchaikovsky Kyiv State Conservatory, where his composition teachers included Adam Soltys, Borys Lyatoshynsky and Myroslav Skoryk.
Stankovych began working as a composer in 1966. From 1970 to 1976, he was an editor at the Muzychna Ukraina publishing house. He held leadership positions in the Union of Composers of Ukraine, including serving as its chairman, and became a professor and head of the composition department at the National Music Academy of Ukraine in 1988.
His output includes six symphonies, twelve chamber symphonies, the folk opera When the Fern Blooms, six ballets and numerous vocal, chamber and instrumental works. His ballets include Olha, May Night, Night Before Christmas and Vikings. He also wrote music for six theatrical productions and more than one hundred films. His works have been performed in concert halls across Europe, North America and Asia, and recorded by labels including Melodiya, Analekta, ASV and Naxos.
In 1992, Stankovych chaired the jury of the First International Festival of Contemporary Music in Canada; in 1996, he was composer-in-residence in the Swiss canton of Bern. He received the 1977 State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR for his Third Symphony, I Affirm, and a 1999 Kyiv Pectoral award for the music to Vikings. He was named People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1986.
