In the summer of 1919, Alexander Glazunov listened to the young Shostakovich and spoke approvingly of his talent for composition. Later, during the difficult years following the death of Shostakovich's father in 1922, Glazunov provided significant help and support to the student, managing to obtain an additional food ration and a personal scholarship for him.
