In 1945, Isaac Schwartz entered the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad Conservatory with Dmitri Shostakovich’s assistance and attended Shostakovich’s classes, although he was formally assigned to Boris Arapov’s class. Shostakovich secretly paid Schwartz’s tuition; this was disclosed by rector Pavel Serebryakov at the 1960 premiere of Schwartz’s ballet On the Eve. When both were accused of “formalism in music,” Schwartz refused to publicly condemn his mentor.
