Felix Blumenfeld studied composition under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, which he entered in 1880. He graduated from the conservatory in 1885 with a gold medal. In 1883, Rimsky-Korsakov presented his completed edition of Mussorgsky's opera Khovanshchina at a meeting of the theatrical committee of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Theatres with Blumenfeld as piano accompanist.
