Witold Maliszewski studied composition under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, graduating in 1902. He belonged to the Belyayev circle. Maliszewski dedicated his Symphony No. 1, Op. 8 (1902) to Rimsky-Korsakov, who later recommended him for the post of head of the music classes at the Odessa branch of the Russian Musical Society, where he began working in 1908.
