Karl van Ark was a Russian pianist and music teacher of Dutch origin. He was born in Saint Petersburg, the son of the organist of the Dutch church in the city.

He studied piano with Theodor Leschetizky and composition with Nikolai Zaremba. From the founding of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1862, he taught piano there as Leschetizky's assistant, and from 1873 he served as a professor.

Van Ark was also the author of piano pieces. In addition to his performing and teaching work, he compiled collections of pedagogical repertoire and prepared the instructional book School of Piano Technique, published in Saint Petersburg in 1875.

His students included Sergei Bortkiewicz, Pavel Weimarn, Artur Lemba, Yevgeny Rapgof, and Nikolai Tcherepnin, among others. Anna Yesipova also studied with him for a short time. He died in Saint Petersburg and was buried at the Volkovo Lutheran Cemetery.
