Sergey Girshenko
Sergey Girshenko is a Soviet and Russian violinist and conductor, born on 11 May 1953 in Rostov-on-Don. He was born into a family of musicians.
He graduated in 1971 from the Secondary Special Music School attached to the Leningrad Conservatory. He then entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied in the class of David Oistrakh. After Oistrakh's death, he continued his studies with Dmitry Tsyganov, under whose guidance he completed the main course in 1977 and a postgraduate assistantship in 1979.
Girshenko became concertmaster soloist of the E. F. Svetlanov Russian State Academic Symphony Orchestra. Alongside his performing career, he has taught at the Moscow Conservatory since 1987 and became a professor there in 2007. He also teaches at the Central Music School attached to the Moscow Conservatory.
His honors include the title Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1989 and People's Artist of the Russian Federation in 2004. In 1989 he also received the Viotto d’Oro Prize in Italy. In 2014 he was awarded the Order of Friendship for major contributions to the development of national culture and art and for many years of fruitful work.
