Vladimir Demyansky
Vladimir Demyansky was a Russian musician, pianist, teacher, methodologist, and professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was born in Saint Petersburg on August 22, 1846, and died there on November 8, 1915.
Until 1869, Demyansky studied law at the University of Saint Petersburg. He later pursued musical studies at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, graduating in 1878 after specializing in piano under G. G. Cross. He remained at the conservatory as a piano teacher, teaching there from 1879 to 1909 and becoming a professor in 1895. From 1881, he also taught in the public classes of the Pedagogical Museum.
Demyansky taught Sergei Rachmaninoff from 1882 to 1885 and also taught Samuil Maykapar. In 1899, he was among the founders of the Society of Music Teachers in Saint Petersburg. His publications on piano teaching included the pamphlet On the Initial Teaching of Piano Playing in the Family (1896) and the book An Essay on Piano-Playing Methodology (1906).
