Yuri (Georgy) Alekseyevich Muravlyov was a Soviet and Russian pianist. He was a soloist of Mosconcert, a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and was awarded the title Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1981. He was the brother of the composer Alexei Muravlyov.
He was born on 8 July 1927. From 1944 to 1947 he studied piano at the Sverdlovsk Conservatory with Professor B. S. Marants and composition with Professor V. N. Trambitsky. In 1952 he graduated with distinction from the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied piano in the class of Professor Heinrich Neuhaus. In 1955 he completed postgraduate studies in piano under Neuhaus.
Muravlyov achieved early recognition in piano competitions. He won third prize at the All-Russian Performers' Competition in 1943 and at the All-Union Competition of Performing Musicians in 1945. In 1949 he became a laureate of the World Festival of Youth in Budapest and of the 4th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. In 1956 he received an honorary diploma and bronze medal at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg.
From 1957 to 1967 he was a soloist of Mosconcert. From 1959 to 1961 he taught special piano at the Gnessin State Musical-Pedagogical Institute. Beginning in 1967, he worked at the interfaculty piano department of the Moscow Conservatory, where he trained many students who later became well-known musicians, including composers, musicologists, and orchestral players.
Muravlyov died on 28 September 2012 at the age of 85. He was buried at Mitinskoye Cemetery.
